Unpopular Opinion: Don’t Quit
I know it’s a bit of an unpopular opinion these days, especially when it feels like the ultimate goal is to reach a point where you can quit your job and focus solely on building your business or chasing other dreams. But here’s the thing — I don’t see anything wrong with continuing to work while also building your business or pursuing other interests.
It seems like there’s this widespread notion that success must be followed by a grand exit. The popular narrative is that once you’ve hit a certain level of success, the next logical step is to quit your job and dive fully into your side projects or entrepreneurial ventures. The idea is that you’ve “made it,” so you should move on to something bigger and better. But what if that’s not the only path? What if staying in your current role and continuing to build your business isn’t just a viable option, but a smart one?
In my own experience, I’ve found that keeping my job while building my business has actually been incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about the financial stability that comes from having multiple sources of income — though that’s a significant advantage. It’s also about the opportunity to keep growing in my current role, learning new things, and making a meaningful impact. The idea that success must lead to quitting doesn’t always align with the reality that many of us face.
Having multiple sources of income can offer a sense of security and flexibility that’s hard to achieve with just one. By keeping a job while pursuing other ventures, you’re not only diversifying your income but also giving yourself the chance to build something sustainable over time. This approach allows you to continue contributing to your field, refine your skills, and stay engaged with a team or organization you believe in — all while nurturing your entrepreneurial spirit.
Let’s be honest: it’s not always about abandoning one path for another. Sometimes, success is about finding balance and integrating your passions into your existing framework. You don’t have to leave your job to prove that you’re successful or to follow your dreams. It’s entirely possible to thrive in your current role while also dedicating time and energy to your side projects.
So, if you’re in a position where you’ve achieved a lot and are considering whether it’s time to quit your job, remember that it’s perfectly okay to stay put and continue working while you build your business. Embrace the idea that having a job and pursuing other interests can coexist and complement each other. Success doesn’t always mean making a dramatic exit; sometimes, it’s about making the most of where you are and exploring new opportunities on your terms.
Here’s to finding fulfillment in balancing your job and your passions. It’s a path worth considering and embracing.
